Your phone screen is one of the most frequently touched and exposed parts of your device. Keys, pockets, bags, everyday handling and accidental contact can gradually leave marks or scratches.
A hydrogel screen protector is a thin, flexible protective film designed to provide an additional protective layer over your phone’s display.
At Reilu PhoneFix in Helsinki, we offer professionally installed hydrogel screen protectors for many phone models, including Clear, Matte and Privacy options.
New to hydrogel? This guide explains how it works, its advantages and limitations, how to care for it after installation, and how it compares with traditional tempered glass.
A hydrogel screen protector is a thin and flexible film applied directly to the surface of a phone’s display.
Unlike rigid tempered glass, hydrogel conforms more closely to the shape of the screen. This can make it particularly useful for devices where conventional pre-cut glass protectors are difficult to find or where the display has curved edges.
Hydrogel is primarily intended to provide everyday surface and scratch protection while maintaining a thin profile and natural touchscreen feel.
It should not be considered a guarantee against screen breakage from drops or strong impacts.
At Reilu PhoneFix, different hydrogel options may be available depending on your phone model.
Clear hydrogel is designed for customers who want protection while keeping the original appearance of their display.
Advantages
Possible disadvantages
Best for:
People who prioritize display clarity and everyday protection.
Matte hydrogel has a non-glossy surface designed to reduce reflections and fingerprints.
Advantages
Possible disadvantages
Best for:
People who dislike fingerprints or frequently use their phone in bright environments.
Privacy hydrogel is designed to make the display more difficult to see when viewed from the sides.
Advantages
Possible disadvantages
Best for:
People who frequently use their phone on public transport, at work, while travelling or in other public places.
Neither option is automatically better for everyone. They are designed with different priorities.

| Impact protection | Limited | Generally better for direct impact |
| Curved displays | Often better suited | Can be difficult on some models |
| Touch sensitivity | Very good | Very good when correctly fitted |
| Fingerprint sensor compatibility | Often good, model dependent | Can vary significantly |
| Edge flexibility | High | Low |
| Privacy option | Available | Available |
| Matte option | Available | Available |
| Feel | Soft/flexible | More glass-like |
| Cracking | Film itself doesn’t shatter like glass | Protector may crack after impact |
| Model availability | Can cover many models | Model-specific protector required |
You want a thin, flexible protector, have a curved or less common phone model, prefer a minimal feel, or cannot easily find suitable tempered glass.
Your main priority is stronger protection against direct impacts and you prefer the harder, glass-like surface.
For some customers, tempered glass is the better choice. For others—especially certain curved displays or less common/new phone models—hydrogel can be a practical alternative.
Hydrogel provides an additional layer of everyday screen protection, but no screen protector can make a phone unbreakable.
Hydrogel can help protect against:
✓ Everyday surface scratches
✓ Minor scuffs and marks
✓ Everyday contact with objects
✓ General wear on the display surface
However, it cannot guarantee protection against:
✕ Severe drops
✕ Strong direct impacts
✕ Screen bending or crushing
✕ Damage to the frame or display underneath
✕ All deep scratches or sharp-object damage
For better overall protection, we recommend combining a suitable screen protector with a well-fitting protective phone case—provided the case does not push against the edges of the hydrogel.
Hydrogel behaves differently from tempered glass.
Immediately after installation, the protector may not necessarily look exactly as it will after it has fully settled.
Small installation marks or minor bubbles can sometimes become less noticeable as the protector settles.
For the best result:
Do not repeatedly press or lift an edge if you notice it moving. Contact us instead so that we can inspect it.
This is particularly important.
Some cases extend tightly over the front edge of the phone. If the case contacts the hydrogel, it may gradually push against the film and cause an edge or corner to lift.
After installation, check that there is a small clearance between the edge of the protector and your case.
If you’re unsure, Reilu PhoneFix can check the fit of your case and protector.
For everyday cleaning:
Hydrogel is a flexible film, so it should not be treated exactly like the original glass surface of the phone.
Don’t immediately peel off the entire protector.
If your hydrogel starts lifting unusually soon after installation:
1. Don’t pull the lifted area.
Pulling can cause a small lifted section to become larger.
2. Check your phone case.
Remove the case temporarily and see whether it was touching the protector’s edge.
3. Keep the affected area clean and dry.
4. Contact Reilu PhoneFix.
We can inspect whether the issue appears to relate to installation, material, case compatibility, external damage or normal use.
Reilu PhoneFix provides a 30-day warranty covering material and installation defects for our hydrogel screen protectors.
If your protector begins lifting unusually around the edges, develops excessive bubbling or shows another possible material or installation defect during this period, please contact us.
We will inspect the protector and, where appropriate, replace it without additional charge when the problem is covered by the warranty.
The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, scratches, impact damage or damage resulting from inappropriate handling, intentionally lifting the edges, or a phone case pressing against the protector.
The 30-day warranty is an additional Reilu PhoneFix benefit and does not limit your statutory consumer rights or the seller’s statutory liability for defects.
Not necessarily. They serve different needs. Hydrogel is thin, flexible and particularly useful for some curved or less common displays. Tempered glass generally offers stronger direct-impact protection and a harder glass-like surface.
Hydrogel can provide additional surface protection, but it cannot guarantee that the display will not break if the phone is dropped or subjected to a strong impact.
Some minor installation marks or bubbles may settle after installation. Avoid repeatedly pressing or lifting the film. If you are concerned about the result, contact us.
Yes, provided the case fits correctly and does not push against or lift the edges of the hydrogel protector.
Compatibility depends on the phone, sensor technology and protector. Hydrogel’s thin construction can make it suitable for many devices, but fingerprint performance cannot be guaranteed for every phone.
There is no single lifespan that applies to every user. Durability depends on the film, phone, case, handling and everyday conditions. Replace the protector when it becomes significantly worn, damaged or no longer adheres properly.
Often, yes. One advantage of our cutting system is support for a wide range of devices. Send us your exact phone model and we can check availability before your visit.
