Good phone care starts with everyday habits. These practical tips apply to most iPhone and Android smartphones released in roughly the past five years, including Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, Xiaomi and other brands. Settings and available features vary by model.
1. 🌡️ Protect Your Phone from Heat and Extreme Cold
Avoid leaving your phone in direct sunlight, inside a hot car or close to a heater. Excessive heat can shorten battery lifespan.
During cold Finnish winters, keep your phone in an inside pocket when possible. Cold can temporarily reduce battery performance or cause unexpected shutdowns. Let a very cold phone return gradually to room temperature before charging—never warm it using a radiator or hairdryer.
2. 🔋 Charge When Needed—You Don’t Have to Wait for 0%
Modern smartphone batteries do not need to be fully emptied before every charge. Short top-ups are fine.
Enable optimised charging, adaptive charging or a battery protection limit if your phone offers it. These features can reduce the time the battery spends fully charged. Charging to 100% when you need a full day’s use is reasonable; you do not need to follow a strict charging percentage rule every day.
3. 🔌 Use Suitable Chargers and Undamaged Cables
Choose chargers and cables that meet your phone manufacturer’s compatibility and safety requirements. Replace accessories with exposed wires, damaged connectors or signs of overheating.
Charge on a firm, uncovered surface with good airflow. Keep your phone and charger out from under pillows, blankets and bedding.
If you notice battery swelling or the screen or back cover lifting unexpectedly, stop using and charging the phone and arrange a professional inspection.
4. 🛡️ Choose Protection That Fits Your Phone
Consider a well-fitting case and a screen protector designed for your exact model. Check that the case does not obstruct the camera, charging connector or buttons.
Keep your phone away from loose sand, keys and other objects that could scratch it. A case or protector cannot guarantee protection against every drop.
For foldable phones, follow the manufacturer’s instructions before removing or replacing the inner screen’s protective film.
5. 🧼 Clean Gently and Keep Objects Out of the Charging Port
Disconnect the charger and switch off your phone before cleaning. Wipe the screen, camera lenses and exterior with a soft microfibre cloth.
Avoid spraying liquid directly onto the phone, using harsh household cleaners or blowing compressed air into openings. Do not dig inside the charging port with a pin or other object. If debris prevents the cable from fitting properly, arrange careful professional cleaning.
6. 💧 Treat Water Resistance as Limited Protection
Not every smartphone is water resistant. Even on supported models, protection can weaken over time through wear or damage. Check your model’s guidance and avoid deliberately exposing it to water.
If the charging port becomes wet, disconnect the cable and let it dry with natural airflow. Do not charge through a wet port, override a moisture warning, use a hairdryer or put the phone in rice. Seek advice if the phone was submerged or develops problems.
7. 🔄 Keep Your Software and Apps Updated
Install official operating system, security and app updates when available. Updates can fix faults and address security weaknesses.
Use your phone’s built-in update settings and trusted app stores. Avoid installing an “urgent update” offered through an unexpected message or website.
For an older phone, check whether the manufacturer still provides security updates for your exact model.
8. ☁️ Back Up Your Data Before You Need It
Enable a suitable automatic backup service and regularly check the date of the last successful backup.
Make sure your photos, contacts, important files and messages are covered. Some apps need separate backup or recovery arrangements; a phone backup does not necessarily include everything.
Before a repair, factory reset or phone replacement, check that your important data is backed up and that you can access the account needed to restore it.
9. 🔐 Secure Your Phone and Prepare for Loss
Use a strong screen-lock PIN or password, with fingerprint or face unlocking if supported. Avoid easily guessed codes such as your birthday.
Check that your phone’s device-finding and remote-locking service is enabled. Turn on two-factor authentication for important accounts, and never share your passwords or verification codes in response to an unexpected call or message.
10. ⚙️ Keep Storage Available and Investigate Slowdowns
Check storage occasionally and remove unused apps, unnecessary downloads and large files you have safely backed up. Avoid letting storage become almost completely full, as this can cause performance problems.
If your phone becomes slow, freezes or repeatedly crashes, try restarting it and checking for updates. If the problem continues, have it assessed before assuming you need a replacement phone.
